![]() His career as an illustrator got a boost the following year with the publication of Washington Irving's Old Christmas, and beginning in 1874 his illustrations appeared in the periodicals The Graphic and Punch. ![]() ![]() After various journals accepted his work, Caldecott went to London in 1872 where he studied at the Slade School with Sir Edward Poynter. His first published drawings appeared in a Manchester newspaper. Born in Chester in northwest England, Randolph Caldecott taught himself to draw as a child and persisted despite his father's wish that he go into banking.
